The President of the Chartered Institute of Professional Printers of Nigeria (CIPPON), Mr. Olugbemi Malomo has called on the Federal Government to localise printing in Nigeria through its policies in order to save the country from losing over N3trillion worth of printing contracts to overseas print jobs.
He made this call during the launch of the institute campaign programme tagged ‘Let Nigeria Print Jobs Remain in Nigeria’ at Abuja recently.
In his words: “One of the things that the government should address is inconsistency in government policies. Now if I want to print a book as a printer, I have to bring in papers. I pay 25 per cent duty on this paper.
“But if I go outside to print books and bring them as education materials, I pay 11 per cent. So, we can’t even compete because of policies. So, everybody goes there, print books, labeling them as education materials and bring them in. So, this policy has to be addressed.”
To address this challenge, CIPPON President, urged the Federal Government to revive the existing paper mills for local capacity development and job creation.
According to him: “Recently, Ghana has decided to set up a paper mill. Our own paper mills are moribund. They are targeting our large population. We call on the government to see how our paper mills can be revived. This can provide massive employment.” He stated
