About the Photograph
Antelope Canyon—known in Navajo as Tsé bighánílíní, “the place where water runs through”—is a sacred slot canyon on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Carved from Jurassic sandstone roughly 190 million years ago, its narrow corridors channel midday sun into ethereal shafts that ignite the walls in layered oranges, violets, and gold. “Spiritual Light” was made in Upper Antelope Canyon during a guided visit, where access is respectfully managed by Navajo guides. Working between shifting beams and drifting dust, John composed the moment when light, form, and air aligned—revealing both the canyon’s sculpted geometry and its quiet, otherworldly presence. He has returned to Antelope Canyon multiple times, finding new inspiration with each visit as color and shadow continuously change. For John, the image is less a static landscape than a living expression of time and reverence—a reminder that great photographs begin with place and stewardship, and endure through the craft of exceptional printing.
