The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to establish better regulatory frameworks in Nigeria’s printing and publishing industry. This call was made by the Director-General of NCC, Dr. John O. Asein, during the opening ceremony of the International Paper, Printing, and Publishing Expo (IPPEX 2024) held in Abuja.
Dr. Asein, a Special Guest at the event, commended the organizers, DCS Integrated Media Limited, for broadening the annual event’s scope to include global perspectives. In his address, he acknowledged the transformative potential of new technologies in a digital-driven world while noting the disruptions they have introduced to the creative and copyright ecosystems.
Strengthening Copyright and Local Industries
Dr. Asein reassured participants of NCC’s commitment to creating a secure environment for the production, distribution, and commercialization of copyright-protected works.
“We must provide the needed incentives for authors to create and for publishers to patronize local printers in Nigeria, thereby revamping the country’s paper and printing industry,” he stated.
The event also highlighted the importance of adopting eco-friendly practices in the printing and publishing industry. Dr. Hauwa V. Ibrahim, representing the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, called on printers and publishers to consider the environmental impact of their operations and to collaborate with academia to enhance publishing standards in universities.
Dr. Ibrahim outlined key expectations from the industry, including:
– Quality and Innovation: Delivering superior products and solutions.
– Technology Integration: Leveraging cutting-edge technology for modern publishing.
– Accessibility and Affordability: Ensuring tailored solutions that meet academic and market needs.
Speaking on the theme of the expo, The Future of Print: Navigating the Landscape of Print industry, the CEO of Printway Limited, Mr. Alonge Kayode, noted that the printing sector is one of Nigeria’s largest employers of labor. He urged the government to prioritize interventions, including access to single-digit loans, local production of raw materials, and attracting more investors to bolster the industry.
Mr. Kayode also called for strengthened collaboration between regulatory agencies and industry practitioners, emphasizing the need for a unified approach to advance the sector.
The exhibition segment of IPPEX 2024 featured printers and equipment vendors showcasing cutting-edge technology and discussing transformative opportunities in the industry.
The event brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including creators, academics, government representatives, and industry enthusiasts. Distinguished attendees included:
– Mrs. Olumuyiwa Abosede Hayi-Ade, Deputy Director of Industrial Development, representing the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment.
