ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Illinois—SCREEN Americas has announced the successful installation of the Truepress Jet L350UV at Hulco Printers Inc. in Scott, Louisiana. The press, which was installed in November 2024, has enabled Hulco Printers to expand its label business significantly, contributing to the local economy.
Located just west of Lafayette, Scott, Louisiana, is known for its Cajun cuisine—spicy shrimp, crabs, crawfish, and the essential hot sauces that make the dishes unforgettable. With such a flavorful culture, there’s always a demand for high-quality labels to accompany these products.
Hulco Printers, established in 1972, initially focused on commercial printing, offering everything from brochures and yard signs to business cards. However, the idea to venture into label production came to Obie Hulin, the second-generation owner, while enjoying a Cajun meal in his kitchen near Vermillion Bay. He realized that there was a need to improve the CMYK labels he saw on products, which sparked his decision to enter the label market.
With a keen business sense and a solid understanding of his community, Hulin quickly saw the opportunity to offer high-quality labels to local businesses. Following the installation of the Truepress Jet L350UV in his 5,000-square-foot facility, Hulin took a hands-on approach, showcasing labels to local prospects. “It was an easy sell to show them what their products could look like with the L350UV,” said Hulin. “Now, with ultraviolet technology, locals no longer need to go out of state for premium labels.”
Within no time, Hulin expanded his client base to 200 businesses within 60 miles of Scott. Today, label production accounts for 40% of Hulco Printers’ overall print revenue.
In addition to increased revenue, Hulin has enjoyed significant savings in ink and paper costs using the Truepress Jet L350UV. “The press allows me to run BOPP material, and the cost per roll is far lower than the stocks I was using before,” Hulin explained. “The savings are substantial and make other technologies less appealing. It’s great to pass these savings on to my customers!”
The Truepress Jet L350UV is now paired with a DC350Nano die cutter from Grafisk Maskinfabrik A/S, producing all of Hulco Printers’ labels.
Looking ahead, Hulin plans to expand his label production even further, contributing to the Louisiana economy beyond the food industry. He sees significant potential in the sugarcane sector as well. “I’m aiming to print millions of labels in 2025 and grow my customer base even more,” Hulin said. “SCREEN has been a fantastic partner. Their service is top-notch, and their responsiveness is impressive. They’re truly a family-oriented company, and that’s exactly the kind of partner I want.”
