Abuja – The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has underscored the importance of quality publishing and local printing in advancing basic education in Nigeria. the Director of Instructional Materials, Mrs. Grace Samuel made this appeal at the opening ceremony of the International Paper, Printing, and Publishing Expo (IPPPEX) recently in Abuja.
In her remarks, Mrs. Samuel highlighted the critical link between quality educational materials and improved learning outcomes in schools. She stressed that UBEC remains committed to fostering collaboration with local publishers and printers to ensure that basic education resources are accessible, affordable, and of high quality.
“The production of textbooks, learning materials, and other educational resources must meet global standards while addressing the unique needs of Nigerian students. Local partnerships with publishers and printers are key to achieving this goal,” she said.
Mrs. Samuel noted that UBEC is actively exploring ways to support the Nigerian printing industry by prioritizing local production for educational materials. She urged printers to invest in modern technology and eco-friendly practices to meet the growing demands of the education sector.
“Empowering the local printing industry is not just an economic strategy but a way to ensure cultural relevance and sustainability in the educational materials we produce,” she added.
Acknowledging the challenges facing the printing and publishing industry, she called for enhanced collaboration between stakeholders, including government agencies, academia, and industry practitioners. Mrs. Samuel emphasized that such partnerships would help address issues such as funding, capacity building, and access to raw materials.
UBEC’s also highlighted the Commission’s focus on making educational resources more affordable and accessible. She urged publishers and printers to innovate and embrace cost-effective solutions that cater to students in underserved communities.
